So you’re walking down the street, and you see someone you know. From a distance. And you’ve got that split second to decide: is this a handshake situation, or a wave? If you go for the handshake too early, you’re just standing there, arm extended, looking like you’re trying to hail a cab with an invisible sign. But if you wait too long for the wave, it’s this awkward, belated flick of the wrist. And what if they go for the handshake when you go for the wave? It’s a social traffic jam! There should be a universally recognized ‘zone’ for each greeting. A handshake perimeter! A wave radius!
