Greeting cards. What are we doing here? You walk into the store, there’s an entire aisle for ‘Get Well Soon From Your Nephew’s Dentist’ or ‘Happy Tuesday to Someone You Kinda Know.’ And the messages! ‘May your day be filled with joy and laughter.’ Really? Just a suggestion? Like I wasn’t planning on that? It’s not a command! ‘Your day *will* be filled with joy!’ No, it’s just a mild wish. And then you sign your name, maybe a little heart. You spent three dollars on this card, you wrote two words, and then it goes in a drawer somewhere for eternity. It’s a whole paper trail of mild sentiment.
