Self-checkout. Is this progress? Or are they just clever enough to get *me* to do their job? I’m scanning my own items, I’m bagging them… I’m practically running the register! And for what? So I can save, what, 30 seconds? And then the machine yells at me: ‘Unexpected item in the bagging area!’ What’s unexpected? My own hand? I put the thing there! It’s *expected*! I feel like I should be getting a discount. Or at least a name tag. ‘Assistant Grocer – Unpaid.’
